MRS. RUTH OSBORNE
The following year Mr. Osborne became lightkeeper of one of Canada’s loneliest lights, the NE. Belle Isle, where supplies and mail arrived only twice per year. Mrs. Osborne served as nurse and doctor substitute to part
of the Newfoundland fishing fleet for nearly 14 years, until the outbreak of World War II when her husband enlisted.
She returned to US. and resumed work for the American Red Cross un- til the end of the war when Mr. Osborne was made lighthouse inspector for the Charlottetown district of the Department of Transport.
Mrs. Osborne organized the RBI. Branch of the Unitarian Service Committee in 1955. She also belongs to the United Church Women, Ladies’ Auxiliary YMCA, is past president of Kings Daughters (Int) and edits and publishes “The Welcome” monthly for 200 shut-ins.
