LOUIS WILFRED ROPER

Louis Roper built his retirement home in Southport in 1949. Southport had many memories for Lou. When small he often visited grandparents (John and Catherine MacCallum) here, crossing on the ferry with his

mother.

He started out with a dairy farm on the Union Road, then spent 28 years as a fieldman with the federal Department of Agriculture and three with the provincial department as livestock director.

Lou was inducted into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1979, the first living Islander to receive this honour. His picture hangs in the Truro Agricultural College, and in the Farm Centre in Charlottetown.
