EVELYN HENRY R.N.
A former resident of Southport, Evelyn Henry (now Mrs. Doug Brown of Bogunda Station, Australia) made her mark by being the first recorded person to swim across Northumberland Strait. She did this on July 15, 1951, in a time of nine hours and 53 minutes.
Evelyn is the daughter of Mrs. Dorothy and the late Stewart Henry. She attended Southport School, Prince of Wales College, trained as a nurse at the RBI. Hospital, graduating in May 1951. In 1954 Evelyn moved to Australia where she met her husband.
Her athletic exploit was recognized when she was inducted into the Prince Edward Island Sports Hall of Fame at Eptek Centre, Summerside.
