MacDONALD

James Aeneas MacDonald was born in Tracadie Cross on February 25, 1896; he married Katherine (Katie) McCabe (1900-1967), daughter of James McCabe and Mary Anne Flynn of Stanhope on September 3, 1923. They bought the farm of Herbert Marshall, on the Stanhope East Road, containing 48 acres, bounded on the east by William Bell’s property, and on the west by James McCabe’s.

Aeneas was a farmer and fisherman until World War II broke out. In 1940, he sold the farm to Lewis and Mary Kielly and bought an acre of land from J .W. Thomas McCabe on the south-east corner of Friston and Stanhope East Roads, and built a house there. He then joined the army and during his wartime duty was involved in the security of the prisoners of war; he served in the Navy in W.W.I.

After the war, he sold the house to John Elliott and Edith Misener who moved it down to the Bay Shore Road, opposite the Stanhope Golf Course. Aeneas and Katie moved to Charlottetown where their daughters, Aileen and Donalda, continued their education at St. Joseph’s Convent and Prince of Wales College, both obtaining teacher’s licenses. After working for some time on the Island, the two daughters went to the Toronto area, where they were both married. Due to Katie’s crippling disease of arthritis, she and Aeneas moved to the Toronto area about 1960 to be with their daughters, and were there until their deaths Aeneas on July 7, 1965; and Katie on March 2, 1967. They are both buried in St. Eugene’s Cemetery, Covehead Road.
