Donald Shaw
Although Donald Shaw (b. 1776 in Colonsay, d. before 1814) was mentioned briefly in the Darrach family history, a little more should be written concerning him.
He came from Colonsay, Scotland on the ship Spencer in 1806 with his father-in-law, Angus Darrach. No record has been found as to which of Angus’ daughters he married, just a reference to my son-in- law, Donald Shaw.
In 1811 Angus Darrach and Donald Shaw had 100 acres in Lot 34. Letters of Administration to Peter Stewart, April 27, 1814, of Lot 34 on the estate of Donald Shaw, deceased, include Fees paid 22/—. . Inventory to exhibit on the 27th of October next, and a final account on or before the 27 April 1815. He stated that the late Donald Shaw of Lot 34 owed considerable sums and he would make a correct statement as soon as he could. A sad postscript to Donald’s death and debts was noted in Benjamin Chappell’s diary for Friday 13 May, 1814 Died Mrs. Shaw. She drove her cattle to town to pay the debt on Wednesday ye 11th Went home to the saw mill, grieved and mourned all day on Thursday and died on Friday and was buried on Saturday.
