of the first Shaws and partly because he had one of the early summer cottages here, although not a year-round resident of Stanhope . He was born on August 4, 1872 and died on January 25,1974, aged 101 years. He married Hazel Hayden (1878-1979) and they had three children, James Harold , Annie Alberta and Marion. He and his wife are both buried in the People's Cemetery , Charlottetown ; on the headstone is engraved the motto from the Shaw coat of arms... Fide et Fortitudine. SHAW Geoffrey William Shaw (born 30 Jan., 1952) and his wife, Janice Lynda , (nee Bull, born 31 Mar., 1954) moved to Stanhope in November, 1977. They had emigrated from Derbyshire, England to P.E.I , one month earlier, and while staying in Harrington arranged to buy the Lyons house on the Stanhope , with 24 acres of land, next to James Allen 's property. Geoffrey, better known as "Jake", came over to start up a machining company in the newly formed in Charlottetown . Jake decided to put his 24 acres to use and started a small hobby farm, keeping horses, cattle, pigs, and sheep, in the hope of becoming a full-time farmer within a few years. Their two children Julie Amanda (born 16 Aug., 1971) and Carolyn Jane (born 23 Sept., 1972) spent two years in Stanhope School before moving to Grand Tracadie School for Grades 4, 5 and 6. In August, 1982 the Shaws moved to Wheatley River . SHELFOON George (born 1925, Charlottetown ) and Janey (nee Barbour, born in 1929, Alma , P.E.I. ) bought \ Vi acres of land in Stanhope from Hubert Roberta in 1958. Next year they built a small drive-in restaurant, the work being done by Watson Ross , Horace Marshall and George Shelfoon . This business was very successful, but they did not enjoy the work, so in 1960 they converted the restaurant into a housekeeping cottage, and built three more, with the same builders. The "Driftwood" cottages were a successful operation. In 1964 the Shelfoons built a permanent home on the same property and moved from Charlottetown to live year-round in Stanhope . Later they sold all but one cottage, and recently they have spent winters (Dec-Apr.) in Florida . George's father, Joseph Anthony CHALFOUN was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1882 and came to P.E.I , in 1894 at age 12 to join his elder brother George, who had come to Canada in 1890 and had settled in Tignish , working first as a pedlar and then opening a store.
