Many social events have been part of their activities such as plann- ing district parties, attending theatre at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, workshops and conventions, picnics and field trips. In their own community they initiated the first Roadside Cleanup Day on Prince Edward Island. Plans were made at one of their meetings, a day was chosen and many residents turned out not knowing what to expect. To everyone’s surprise six half ton trucks were needed to haul away the garbage from the ditches which included everything from pop bottles t0 barbed wire. So successful was the venture that the Journal Pioneer carried a pic— ture and a story about it and before long it became an established practice for all Women’s Institutes across the province to hold a roadside clean—up in May of each year.
