4-H Club

The Wilmot Valley 4-H Club was organized in the fall of 1964. The teacher in the local school, Mrs. Edith Huestis, had several girls among her pupils who were interested in learning to sew and knit so she decided to use the 4-H program to provide this training.

The first members were: Judith Hogg, Judy Folland, Karen Millar and Faye Farrar. So successful was this venture that the membership increased to thirty in the next seven years. Their name, “The Busy Beavers,” was suitably chosen for this very active group. With the support of the Women’s Institute they bought a sewing machine and were soon underway. Along with sewing, they learned to knit and embroider, and were soon winning prizes at exhibitions, locally and provincially, They learned public speaking and the correct way to conduct a business meeting, and put their training

into practice by putting on programs for the Women’s Institute.

Each spring brought the excitement of the yearly Valentine Tea. the Demonstration and Public Speaking Night, and Achievement Day. Repre— sentatives from the Department of Agriculture came to judge their work. In 1969 Judy Folland and Judith Hogg planned a team demonstration under the heading “Anytime is Sandwich Time". They were chosen as winners at club level, provincial level and at the Atlantic Winter Fair. They were in- vited to present their demonstration on Island Television.

The club members and leaders attended provincial youth rallies, tours, conferences, 4-H Field Days and 4-H Rural Youth Fairs. They formed a judging team to compete at the Atlantic Winter Fair and took part in a radio quiz. Modelling and attending theatre at Confederation Centre were other interesting experiences as well as their interesting trips to points of interest on Prince Edward Island.
