[70 A Bridge To The Past 1880. On Lake‘s Topographical Map of 1863 the name of S.L. Hale appears on the Clark property. Possibly he had a small house near the site chosen for the community hall, which hastened its disappearance; in any case no one has heard of a house having been in that area. Since Mr. Hale’s shop was on the Blueshank we will treat him as being near this road. HALE Simon Loring Hale (1829-1864), a marble-worker from Waterville, Maine, married Julia A. Kempton ofPhillips, Maine. Mr. Hale lived first in Charlottetown, and later moved to Wilmot Valley. His marble-shop was across the Blueshank in Lot 19, and his house was near the school—house. The Hales do not seem to have lived in this community for a long period; they are not in the census of 1861, but they are on Lake's map in 1863. Simon died in 1864, and the family apparently returned to Charlottetown. Simon and Julia had three children, all born on P.E.l. between 1855 and 1863; Joseph Albert, Arthur Edson and Herbert Irving. Julia married Matthew Stevenson in November of 1865. ARTHUR Charles Arthur (1846) lived in a house on the Blueshank, approx- imately where the Wilmot Grove Road now lies. His house was a very early type, and was long and low. He had a shop in his home where he con- structed many small articles. Mr. Arthur is known to have made ladders. Judging from the census of 188! at which time he seems to have lived in Summerside, Charles married a girl named Mary Jane (1847) who was a milliner. He was described as a trader. After leaving Wilmot Valley in about 1918 Charles and a daughter Ada moved to Summerside and lived with Charles’ son James. The children of Charles and Mary Jane were: James Howard (Apr. 22, 1866-1935) married Eva MacWilliams (1880- 1955). James was a tinsmith in Summerside. Some of his family still live in Summerside. Robert Samuel (March 1 1, 1867) was a sectionman on the railroad. He and his wife had a rooming-house at one time, called the “Fernwood.” John Albert (May 22, 1869) Minnie B. (ca. 1873) William (ca. 1874) married Martha Gamble (1871—1904). Ada Jane or Edith (ca. 1876) Frank R. (ca. 1879)
