BAKER
Davis Baker (Aug. 2, 1878-Aug. 12, 1973) was the son of Joseph Baker of South Freetown. He married, in Boston on July 5, 1905, Bertie Biggar (Sept. 16, 1881-Nov. 23, 1963) daughter of Charles and Emily (Williams) Harding of Stanley Bridge.
Davis had a long and varied career. At sixteen years of age he appren- ticed to Fred Wright who owned a grist-mill at Centreville Bedeque. Davis remained here for nearly three years receiving $50 pay for the first year‘s work and $60 pay for the second. He then went to Maine where a number of his relatives were living and worked on a milk route. From here he moved to Claremont, NH. and worked at a grist-mill. One year he travelled widely with a circus group, “The Great Wallace Show”. He went to Boston and became a carpenter. It was here in Boston that he fell in love with and married Bertie. In 1907 he and Bertie returned to P.E.l. and settled on his father’s farm in South Freetown. About 1914 they moved to Kinkora and three years later returned to South Freetown. In 1923, they moved to Freetown Village where Davis went into partnership with Robert Auld, genera] merchant. In 1928, they went to Summerside where Davis worked at Holman's until 1933 and then did carpentry work until he moved to Wilmot Valley around 1959. Mr. Baker lived in a cottage next to the Wilmot River where the bridge now crosses. He lived here until about 1960 when he moved to Charlottetown. Later he had both legs amputated. He died in August, 1973.
Davis and Bertie had two children, Hazel Jean (July 5, 1907) who married John Andrew and Stanley Harold (Sept. 22, 1910) who married Bessie White.
