226 A Bridge To The Past
Jimmie (1912-1973) married Dorothy Somers. They lived in Kelvin and had six children.
After the Peters family and Captain Dare left the community, no one occupied these cottages. In the 1930‘s, one of them burned to the ground. Earl Schurman later had the other cottage torn down. In 1943, when the Wyman Clark house was moved down to the present Ira Arsenault place, the porches from that hOuse were bought by Earl Schurman, moved across the pond and converted into cottages. These were occupied by tourists and have since had various owners. The property belongs now to Randall Ross who plans to build a home in the near future.
The last home at the end of the lane is that of Peter White. This farm was originally owned by the Schurmans and was sold to Jonathan Weather- bie, probably a proprietor, as he does not appear on the census. This land was apparently then sold to James Green.
GREEN
James Green (June 8, 1816- ) was the son of George Green of Summerside and grandson of Daniel and Martha (Oat) Green. James married Hannah Baker of Bedeque after courting her through the winter. This meant travelling across Bedeque Bay on the ice. Hannah was very anxious for matrimony but it took James, a very shy individual by nature, a long time to make up his mind. Eventually he proposed to Hannah and married her. He said to Hannah, “1 will be the father of your children if you will be the mother of mine.” They lived in Wilrnot Valley until 1863 when they sold the property to Samuel Burrows. We believe they mov ed to Summerside. James and Hannah had four children: Phillip, Archibald, William and one daughter.
BURROWS
Samuel Burrows (Aug. 4, 1827-Dec. 8, 1884) was the son of Thomas and Sarah (Tuplin) Burrows of Springbrook. A shortage of water prompted Samuel to move to Wilmot Valley from Long River, after attempting to dig a well with no results. He purchased a farm from James Green in 1863. Samuel farmed and was a carpenter and carriage builder. He married Mary Johnston (Nov. 27, 1827-Jan. 25, 1898). They had the following family:
Isabel (Nov. 10, 1852-Dec. 21, 1940) married John Moase of New Annan.
John Andrew (Oct. 12, 1854-Feb. 21, 1940) married (1) Mary Stavert (2) Isabella MacNeill (3) Elizabeth Cairns. (See John Burrows).
Carolyn (Aug. 29, 1858—May 8, 1935) married Bennet Haywood of Mill River.
