SCHURMAN

“William Schurman, Loyalist,” by Ross Graves, provides an abun- dance of information on the early period of Wilmot Valley history. The facts provided here on William and his family are taken from these volumes, with the exception of a few details regarding his Wilmot Valley homestead.

William Schurman (ca. 1743-Sept. 15, 1819) married Jane Bonnet (who died in 1777) in 1768. In 1778 he married Elizabeth Hyatt who died in 1843 at Bedeque. The Schurmans moved to P.E.I. in 1783, and some of William‘s enterprises are described in the opening chapters of this history. William and his family made their home in this community in 1809 or 1810 in order for William to be near the sawmill. Information from older residents and evidence of a well near the riverbank, on Elmer Waugh’s pro- perty, place their home slightly north of the Folland home, just upstream from the milldam. William spent his last years in Wilmot Valley, ensuring the successful operation of the mill. William lived a vigorous and produc- tive life, and died a respected citizen, beloved of family and friends. William and Jane had four children:

Peter (Sept. 24, 1769-1868) married Mary Bremble and lived in Central Bedeque. Their children were: William (died at fourteen years), Jane, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Sarah Bremble, David, Mary, Peter, William (died in infancy), William and Lucy Ann.
