MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE FOR AIR

Mrs. J.H. Waugh, OTTAWA Wilmot Valley, January 20, 1945 Prince Edward Island.

Dear Mrs. Waugh:

I am writing to say that all ranks of the Royal Canadian Air Force join me in warmly congratulating you and the members of your family on the honour and distinction which have come to your son, Flight Sergeant James Harry Waugh QEM, through the award of the Distin— guished Flying Medal for great gallantry in the performance of his duty while serving with No. 42C Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

The citation on which this award was made reads as follows:

"This airman has taken part in a number of sorties and has proved himself to be a cool and confident crew member. One night in Nov- ember, 1944, he was the rear gunner in an aircraft detailed to at- tack Obershausen. After leaving the target area the bomber was intercepted by a fighter. The enemy aircraft came in with guns blazing. Flight Sergeant Waugh coolly withheld his fire and gave the necessary evading directions to his pilot. When the attacker was within close range Flight Sergeant Waugh opened fire. Hie bullets struck the enemy aircraft which burst into flames, fell away and afterwards crashed on the ground. This airman displayed skill and coolness worthy of much praise."

The personnel of the Force are proud of your son's fine Service record.

With kindest personal regards

Yours sincerely,

754,;

Acting Minister of National Defence for Air
