anxious to keep the spirit, the fervour, the esprit de corps for which former members had become renowned. No other group of its time rejoiced in its history, flaunted its legends, proclaimed its music, or publicized its athletics with as much pomp and gusto. The Caledonian Club had done well in the previous thirty-six years. It had organized; it had spruced up the traditional St. Andrew’s Day dinners; it had given birth to a number of good plans, among them: the Highland Games, a charity fund, a Debating Society, a Literary Society, public lectures, the purchase of land, the club’s incorporation, the Burns Concerts. This last half of the nineteenth century represented the golden age of formal Scottish societies, the heyday of club activity. The club was mature, but still zealous; its members more concerned with their role in the Island community, but no less enamoured with their status as Scotsmen. M I Isl-II R 3 no 3.
