Marshall Macdonald became interested in the society in 1836 during a visit to him by Highland Society founder R.C. Mac- donald, then in France. Some friends of the Marshall belonged to the society in Prince Edward Island; hence, he gave to R.C. Mac- donald a portrait of his son and a donation to the society, thus becoming an honorary member.
