     The Protector and Christian Witness, which had merged with 
     
     Haszard's Gazette in March of 1857,I was a Protestant news— 
     
     paper which published religious articles. It opposed Roman 
     
     Catholicism and advocated Bible reading in the schools. Some 
     
     foreign and local news, anecdotes and advertisements were also 
     
    
   
   
    
     printed in it. The Protector and Christian Witness was suc— 
     
     ceeded by the Protestant and Evangelical Witness.2
