     The Royal American Gazette and Weekly Intelligencer of the 
     
     Island of saint John was first published in Charlottetown on 
     
     Sept. 15, 1787. It mainly printed foreign news excerpted 
     
     from other papers, but proclamations, local news, and ad— 
     
     vertisements also appeared in it. Local news coverage in- 
     
     cluded reporting on the House of Assembly and on the Loyalist 
     
     land claims. The Royal American Gazette apparently ceased
