FIFTH GENERATION 4. I New England, with all my silver, except what was given to Enoch Hazard and Thomas Hazard by their grandmother, Mary Wickom, deceased." The deed re— ferred to above, “ from my brother Jonathan,” mentions “ the great shipyard.” The Pier is what is now known as Watson’s Pier. This deed and will goes to prove that this line of the Hazard family were not only large farmers and export— ers of the products of their plantations, but also shipbuilders. This would account for the great prosperity of Thomas Hazard, the third in descent, and the large amount of ready money, in “good silver Spanish dollars,” that he invested in land at a time when money was extremely scarce. Mr. Weeden in his account of the early shipbuilding in New England, says that many of the staunch American ships were sent to England and sold with their cargoes, often consisting of ship— timber and tall masts for the King’s navy. “They knew by experience that a present of huge masts was the surest approach to the favor and bounty of their sovereign.” ‘ Perhaps Thomas Hazard was one of those men who walked through their woodland, to mark the tall, straight trees, “ For the King."
