STEPHEN HAZARD, 5 (Thomas,4; Stephen, 3 ; Robert, 2; Thomas, I), was born about 1730. He died October 24, 1804., in North Kingstown. There is no certainty about the dates of his birth, of his marriage, or of the birth of his children, as no records of them can be found. He was called “Short Stephen,” being one of the exceptional Hazards that could not boast of his six feet and great strength. His mother, Hannah Slocum, was a very small woman, not over five feet in height, and so slight that her husband could span her waist with his two hands. Stephen Hazard adhered to the cause of the Crown during the war of 1776, and was one of those sent out of the town for giving aid to the enemy. When allowed to return to the town, on his parole, he refused to serve when drafted. It is difficult to place his house, or the place where his children were born. At one time he was the keeper of the lighthouse at Point Judith, and at another he was living in Jamestown. He married, about 1760, Elizabeth, daughter of Daniel and Renewed (Smith) Carpenter.
