64.8. ISAAC PEACE HAZARD, born Oct. 3, 1794, in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, at the house of his grandfather, Tbamar Hazard. He was educated at the Friends’ School at West-town, near Philadelphia. On leaving school, about 1810, he returned to South Kingstown, and at once began to assist his father in business, passing the greater part of his life at Peacedale. He took a most kindly interest in the welfare of his neighbors there. He was constantly ap- pealed to for advice and assistance, and no one whom he could aid ever applied to him in vain. He possessed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. He never sought political power or oflice, but in response to the earnest solicitations fof his townsmen, he on six occasions rep- resented the town of South Kingstown in the General Assembly. From the organization of the Peacedale Manufacturing Company, in 1848, he was president of the company, until he retired in 1864.. His brother, Rawlaad G. Hazard, was the treasurer, but the names of the offices do not indicate, with any exactness, the duties which each discharged. They divided the conduct of the business between them. After his retirement from active business, in 1864, he went to live with his sister at Newport. He was never married. He died on the second of March, 1879. He lies'buried at Peacedale, in the Oak Dale Cemetery, among scenes with which he was so familiar, and among the people whose welfare he had so much at heart.2

6524. JOSEPH PEACE HAZARD, born Feb. 17, 1807,1n Burlington, NewJersey, from whence his parents removed to Bristol, Pennsylvania, in his thirteenth year, when Peacedale became his home. In 1835, he erected a woolen mill at Peacedale, which was operated for several years, and sub- sequently leased, after which he abandoned business. Having a taste for travel, Mr. Hazard acquainted himself thoroughly with the land of his birth, and" In I 856 made the tour of Europe, spending much time in London and Rome. For many years much of his time was spent abroad, until 1879, when he returned to his native land. Mr. Hazard was among the first to foresee the advantages presented by Narragansett Pier as a popular watering- p-lace, and at an early day fur- nished means to aid in‘its development, and promote its growth. He was a considerable holder of land at that point, and in 1 84.6 began the erection of what is known as the “ Castle,” —a picturesque structure surmounted by two towers. Mr. Hazard died at the residence of his brother, Raw/and G. Hazard, in Peacedale, Rhode Island.3
