with a handkerchief firmly grasped in his hand, which had not been opened in three days. He had walked to the place to beg Colonel George Brown to open his hand with the above—mentioned remedies. Colonel Brown had a good violin, and was a famous player, and after giving the patient his rum, proceeded to charm away the evil force with his music. When the hand opened, the inside was found to be ofa dark purple, from the long continued pressure.

Mr. Hazard was exceedingly fond of flowers, especially the June pink, a large bed of which, near the door of his house, in its season, shone a bright spot in the surrounding green, sending its fragrance to the water’s edge, and even across the stream. Scarlet beans and morning—glories were planted with the gar- den—beans, and a row of sweet—peas with the garden—peas; and he rarely left his house for a walk to the village, in the summer, without a large bunch of these fragrant flowers in his hand to be given to some “ neighbor.” Every man was either his “ neighbor ” or “ cousin,” for he, being a Quaker, was debarred the use of“ Mr.” or “ Mrs." His home was near the centre of what is now the River Side Cemetery; and even to this day bunches of Napoleon’s Dirge, and bits of moss—pink can be found in the early summer springing up near the site of the old house, a fitting memorial Of this lover of flowers.
