§456. MARY PECKHAM, 6 (Mary Hazard, 5; Governor George, 4; Colonel George, 3; Robert, 2; Thomas, 1). She married, October 17, 1780, Doctor Joshua Perry, son of Judge Freeman and Mercy (Hazard) Perry. He was born 1756, and died November, 1801. He was surgeon in Colonel Church’s battalion of Newport, King’s (and Bristol Counties, in 1781. He and his wife were first cousins.

§ 457- PELEG PECKHAM, 6 (Mary Hazard, 5 ; Governor George, 4.; Colonel George, 3; Robert, 2; Thomas, I), was born June 11, 1762. He in— herited from his father, Benjamin Peckham, land in Matunuck, on which he built, in 1784, a large house, and a store attached, as the custom then was. The house is standing today, a good specimen of the old—time mansion—house, so Often men- tioned in the wills of the last century. Here Peleg Peckham carried on a small business in connection with his farming, and dispensed to his neighbors the usual assortment of goods found in a country store, not forgetting the indispensable New England rum, without which a house or barn could not be raised, a man buried, or a child born. Near the close of the last or the beginning of the pres— ent century, he moved to Rensselaerville, New York, selling his house and farm to Doctor George Hazard, his cousin. Mr. Peckham was a member of the So— ciety of Friends, among Whom he held a prominent position. In 1784, Nailor Tom Hazard” records in his diary that Peleg Peckham brought his mother here,” and adds, “I carried her to meeting behind me on horseback.” She was then sixty—two years of age.
