§ 792. JOHN RHODES GARDINER, 7 (Eunice Haszard, 6; Thomas, 5; Jonathan, 4; Thomas, 3; Robert, 2; Thomas, I), was born April 24, 1798. When about twenty years of age, Mr. Gardiner visited his relatives in Rhode Island, many of those whom his father and mother left behind, when they went to Prince Edward Island in 1786, being then still living. There he met his first cousin, Mary Gardiner, whom he married on May 29, 1822. Shortly after his marriage, he returned to his native place, North River, Prince Edward Island. After a residence there of three years, he moved to Bedeque. In 1836, he pur- chased the Gordon Grove property of three hundred and fifty acres, situated in the same settlement. He then became an extensive and prosperous tiller of the soil and remained on the farm until 1866, when he removed to the town of Sum— merside. There he lived until his death on the 10th of September, 1874. The Summerside yourmzl noticed his death as follows: “ This week we have to record the death of the Honorable John Rhodes Gardiner, of this Town, whose name is familiar to most of our readers. In the course of his eminently successful and useful career, he occupied some of the most prominent and honorable positions in this colony. He was appointed by the Crown a Legislative Councillor for Prince Edward Island in 1860, a position which he held for three years. In 1864 he was High Sheriff for this (Prince) County and President of the Summerside Bank from 1866 to 1869.” He was also Justice of the Peace for the County and a Commissioner of small debts for Bedeque, &c. After his marriage with his first wife, Mr. Gardiner made frequent trips to Rhode Island to visit his relatives and friends. His last visit was made in the summer of 1874. ,
He married, first, May 29, 1822, Mary Gardiner of Rhode Island. She died at Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, February 15, 1830, aged twenty-six years. He married, second, March 9, 1831, Mary Hooper, daughter of Major Hooper, a Loyalist, from New Jersey, United States. She was born September 18, 1802, at Bedeque, and died January 25, 1890.
