1770o. CAROLINE SLIDELL PERRY; married, Nov. 7, 1849, Hon. Angzm‘ Belmont; died 189—. Angwt Belmont was born in Alzei, Hesse-Darmstadt, his father being a small landed proprietor in the Rhenish Palatinate. Early in life he obtained a position in the office of the Roth- schilds, and before the age of twenty found himself entrusted with the management of negotia- tions between his employers and various Continental governments. In 1837 he came to New York to represent the Rothschilds in this country. In 1844. he was appointed as Consul- General of Austria to New York, which position he held until 1850. He was later appointed American Minister to the Netherlands, and, through his influence with the Rothschilds, he succeeded in sustaining the credit of the United States Government during the Civil War; and to his efforts has also been attributed the non-recognition Of the Confederacy by England and France. Mrs. Belmont was for a great many years one of the most conspicuous figures in the society Of New York. There were six children, four of whom survived her: Perry Bel- mont, for eight years a member of Congress, and subsequently United States Minister to Spain; flugzm‘ Belmont, the head Of the firm of Angus! Belmont Eg’ Company, bankers; Frederita Bel- mont, wife of Mr. S. S. Hon/land,- Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont; 7ennie, who died at the age of seventeen; and Raymond Rogerr, who was killed by the accidental discharge Of a pistol.
