He was married September, 1814, to Harriet Moore, in Newport. Mr. Hazard was a man of strongly marked charaéter, who fearlessly expressed his opinions, and clung tenaciously to what he conceived to be right. He had no sympathy with shams of any kind. Of sturdy honesty—a self— —respeéting, but not a self— a—sserting man—of 1ron will and indomitable energy, yet extremely modest in his desires, he was contented 1n an humble course, and of simple tastes. He was happy 1n his domestic life, and devoted to his family, for whom he toiled industriously early and late, and for whom his self-sacrificing affection was bound- less. Deeply religious, he rested securely in an unswerving, child—like confidence in his Heavenly Father.
He was possessed of a wonderfully retentive memory for subjeéts which inter— ested him, and he could quote from his favorite books with unerring facility. On matters of personal family history he was very entertaining, and his style of pre- senting faéts carried interest, conviction of the truth and reliability. He was a man universally respected by his fellow—townsmen of Newport, who listened with interest, even when they could not agree with his opinlons , for his presentation of a case was clear, persistent and emphatic. In personal appearance he was tall, dignified and 1mpressive, with square, forcible chin, prominent nose, firm mouth and high forehead. Even at eighty years his step was strong and elastic, his form straight and unyielding to the weight of years, his eyesight undimmed, his hear— ing distinct and unimpaired, his voice strong and clear as that ofa young man.
