In early life Mr. Haszard attended the University of Edinburgh as a medical student for some time, but finding the studies not agree— able to him, he returned to his home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and succeeded to his father’s printing and bookselling business. With enterprise unusual in those days, he imported from New York a cylinder printing-press, from which he issued “ Haszard s Gazette,” and other publications This was the first printing-press driven by steam— —power used In the Island. About 1855, his brother-in—law, George W. Owen, entered into partnership with him, under the name of Haszard & Owen. This connection continued until Mr. Owen’s de— parture for New Zealand, in 1858. Mr. Haszard retired from the printing and book business about 1863. He married, May 14., 1850, Margaret, daughter of Thomas Owen, Esquire, Postmaster—General of the Colony. CHILDREN 2328.
