In 1841—2, he became interested in the temperance movement known as the “ Washingtonian,” first started in Baltimore, Maryland. In this he worked with the zeal and ardor that characterized any enterprise in which he took part. This work was so thoroughly done that soon there was a marked change in the town. For a number of years it was impossible for a man to obtain intoxicating liquor nearer than Charlestown. In 1841, he was chosen president of the Wakefield Bank. He held this position until his death, in 1867. He united with the Baptist Church in December, 1838. No one loved the old church better than he, and he was always trying to do some— thing for its prosperity. He filled a large place in the growth and advancement of his town. He married, Oétober 9,1822, Eliza, daughter of Joseph Noyes, and grand—daughter of Colonel Joseph Noyes, who was an officer in the army, and who served through the war of 1776. CHILDREN 2387.
