§ 1745. JOSEPH EDWARD HAZARD, 8 (Joseph, 7; Richard, 6; Judge Car- der,5; Governor George, 4; Colonel George,3; Robert, 2; Thomas, I), was born September 10, I8 5 5. Mr. Hazard worked on a farm until the age of sixteen, when he commenced teaching school, by which he was enabled to pay for his in- struétion at Chamberlain Institute, in Napoli, New York. He graduated from this Institute with “ honors ” in 1 876, and is now president of the Alumni Asso- ciation of that institution. In 1876 he began to read law, and in 1880 was ad— mitted to practice in the courts of the State, and in I 88 5 was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States. He is an indefatigable worker, and has held a number of positions of trust, which he has filled with credit. In 1880, owing to the illness of the Indian Agent of the State, in whose office he was at that time clerk, he was appointed Acting Agent, and held the position until another agent was appointed by the President. For a number of years he has been Superintendent of the Indian Schools on the Alleghany and Catteraugus Reservation. He married, Oétober I, 1877, Ada B., daughter of Orrey Snow. CHILDREN

He is a farmer, the only member of the family who rep— resents the time—honored occupation of his Rhode Island ancestors. He lives on a farm in Napoli, New York. He married, October 8, I879, Ida E., daughter of Eben Sibley. '
