the visits of General Fanning, a former governor of the Island, and Chief Justice Colclough, and other notables of the place, who were most cordial. The Chief Justice carried his kindness so far as to write to the BishOp the following day, inviting him to hold divine service in the new courthouse which he had caused to

be swept out and prepared for the purpose. This offer was gratefully accepted,

and on Thursday morning the 16th of July 1812, the Catholics of Charlottetown assembled to assist at their first public mass. The day previous, in default of

a better place. the Bishop had been obliged to celebrate the Holy mysteries in

an inn kept by a Catholic - probably Mrs. bcPhee.

At the conclusion of the mass in the courthouse, Bishop Pleasis gave an exhort- ation which he says in his journal, was "in very bad English". In this address he impressed upon the faithful. the urgent necessity of providing a chapel for them- 861V88,8qdngthat he hoped by the next spring, there would be one built upOn a site which had been offered by a Mrs. Callback, a Protestant widow. Confiding the work to the care and zeal of Father Mcfiachern. the Bishop closed by nandng St. Eunstan of Canterbury as the titular saint of the proposed church. Later in the day the Bishop called upon Hrs. Callback to thank her and to encourage her in her charitable project. Having dined with the governor on Wednesday and with General Fanning on Thursday, the Bishop excused himself from accepting the invitation of Chief Justice Colclough for Friday and made preparations for embarking. The kindness of his new friends followed him even to his little schooner, which his. chonald of Glenaladale had furnished with provisions for the voyage, such as mutton, butter, and cheese. Mrs. McPhee had baked him a plentiful supply of bread and pastry.
