MISSION OF THE HOLY MAGI FREETOWN

The districts which constitute this mission are Freetown. Summerfield. Irishtown and Park Corner. The mission as it now exists was formed in 1865 from portions of the parishes of St. Mary's Indian River. and St. Malachy. Kincora. although lohg prior to that date there was a little church in the district of Park Corner. which is know to history as 'Irishtown Church". In the year 1828. BishOp McDonald then priest in charge of the western section of Prince Edward Island. purchased an acre of land from one Charles Doyle of Park Corner and built a chapel upon it. and consecrated a cemetery. In that chapel Father McDonald held a station twice a year and the custom was followed by his successors until the year 1855. when Father James McDonald. then priest in charge of Indian River and-the adjoining missions. sold the chapel to one James Doyle who pulled it down and built himself a dwelling house with the scantling and lumber. This transaction closed the history of the Iriehtown church. The foundation stone of the parish church of Freetown. was laid on the 25th October 1865. by the Right Rev. Peter McIntyre. Bishop of Charlottetown. The church measures fifty feet in length by thirty in breadth. It was completed in 1870. In 1876 a bell was procured for the mission and in the month of September of that year it was formally blessed by the Bishop. In 188% a handsome set of stations of the cross was purchased for the church and erected by his Lordship the Bishop in the spring of the following year.

This mission has always been served from St. Mary's Indian River.
