Reverend Francis W. P. Bolger, the editor of this booklet, is a native of St. Ann’s Parish, Hope River. He did his undergraduate studies at Prince Of Wales College and at Saint Dunstan’s University, Charlotte- town. He studied Theology at the Grand Seminary of Montreal, and was ordained to the Priesthood in June, 1951.

After spending some two years as an assistant priest at Saint Dun- stan’s Basilica, he was appointed to the staff of Saint Dunstan’s University. He then studied history at the University of Toronto from where he was graduated in 1959 with a Ph.D. He taught history at Saint Dunstan’s University from 1959 until 1969, and at the University of Prince Edward Island from 1969 until the present. In addition to his teaching assign- ments, he chaired the History Department from 1959 until 1974.

Father Bolger is the author of three books: Prince Edward Island and Confederation, 1863- 1873, published in 1964, Canada’s Smallest Province, which appeared in 1973; and, The Years Before Anne, which was published in 1974.

Recognized as an authority on the history of Prince Edward Island, Father Bolger is the Island’s representative on the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. He is a frequent lecturer in Island history to Island and other Canadian audiences.
