Priests of the Diocese attended along with a large concourse of people from East Point to Tignish . Various booths were located on the grounds at which refreshments were available and the "hungry multitude" was fed by the Parishioners of Vernon River . On the evening previous to the main celebrations of the day, special services were held in the beautiful re¬ decorated Church and Monsignor A. A. MacAulay of St. Peter 's Bay gave a fitting and eloquent sermon. In addition to attending to his Pastoral duties which he carried out with utmost dedication, Father McGuigan also operated a large and successful farm. Like his predecessor, Father Patrick Doyle , his fine herd of cattle along with other stock drew the attention and admiration of many. In those days a large and progressive butter factory was in operation at Lake Verde and Father McGuigan's productive herd of cattle led the factory, for many years, in the pro¬ duction of butter fat. A most gracious host, Father McGuigan entertained many high ranking Church dignitaries among whom were Cardinal Gibbons of Balti¬ more and Cardinal McGuigan, then Archbishop of Toronto , and many others. As St . Joachim's Church celebrates its one hundredth anniversary of its building in 1977, it is felt, by many, that the fine condition of the one hundred year old Church and the over one hundred year old Parish House is due, in no small part, to his leadership along with the good co¬ operation of his parishioners in the constant care and attention that was given them. Father McGuigan died on November 16, 1937 and is buried at Vernon River . Upwards of some fifty Priests along with Archbishop J. A. O' Sullivan assisted at the Pontifical Mass together with a large crowd of people. 30
