re-shingled and re-decorated. In 1964 the original stately spire had to be taken down and replaced by the present one. Also, the cemetery was com- pletely improved making a vast change in the general appearance of the burying ground.
On the one hundredth anniversary of the death of the first Pastor, Father Brady, Mass was celebrated by Bishop Malcolm A. MacEachern in July, 1962. The sermon for the occasion was preached by Rt. Reverend Raymond MacKenzie, a native son of the parish. Baths-1% was also responsible for initiating the recitation of the rosary before mass, a practice that is still being carriedwoutCAD—Iiri‘ngfifiis time the parking lot was paved as was also the road leading to the cemetery.
In the Fall of 1967 illness confined Father Gillis to the hospital where he died on January 1, 1968. His funeral was held on January 4, 1968 from St. Joachim’s Church where mass was celebrated by Bishop MacEachern with the sermon being preached by Rt. Reverend Patrick McMahon. A large gathering of clergy and laity attended his funeral. He was buried in the cemetery plot for Priests in Vernon River.
