His first appointment was as professor at St. Dunstan’s College. He was then appointed to St. Dunstan’s Cathedral staff, and in 1913 be- came secretary to His Lordship Bishop O’Leary. After two years as secre- tary Father MacDonald was in 1915 appointed parish priest of Morell. Answering the call to arms a year later he was appointed Chaplain of the 105th Infantry Battalion and crossed to England with his unit. He went through several severe battles and won a high place in the regard of officers and men alike. In August, ’1919, Father MacDonald returned home and received a warm welcome not only from his own acquaintances but from hundreds who had come to know and love him through his companionship with their sons at the front. He returned to his parish at Morell remaining there only one year. In 1920 he was appointed to the parish of St. George’s where he remained until his fatal illness. He died at the Charlottetown Hospital, November, 1922. His remains were moved from the hospital to lie in state at St. Dunstan’s Cathedral where Solemn Mass of requiem was offered. His remains were forwarded by train that evening to St.
George’s for Solemn Requiem Mass. His remains were interred in St. George’s Cemetery.
Reverend Austin D. McInnis — 1880-1935
Reverend Austin D. McInnis was born in Earnscliffe in the parish of Vernon River in 1880, the son of Augustine McInnis and Margaret McInnis. As a young man he enrolled at St. Dunstan’s College and there studied classics and philosophy. His higher studies were interrupted by poor health. He finished his theological course at St. Patrick’s Seminary, Menlo Park, California. Having being incardinated by the Archbishop of Vancouver, he was ordained in the Cathedral of Vancouver on Septem- ber 6, 1914.
He offered his first Solemn High Mass at St. Catherine’s Church, Burlingome. California. He served for some time as Pastor of St. Francis Xavier Church, Trail, B.C., but that oft fatal disease, tuberculosm, at length, compelled him to quit work. He went to Tuscon, Arizona with the hope that he could there fight off T.B. His hopes were doomed with disappointment and he died on April 2nd, 1935. His funeral services were held at St. Andrew’s Church, Pasadena, California and his body laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles, California.
