pastor of the Church of Immaculate Conception of Nelson , B.C. Here in the most beautiful spot in the , Father MacKenzie was a com¬ petent teacher and guide to all Catholics for many miles around. He was also the philosopher and friend of many non-Catholics. His influence was great. His manner of stating his views compelled attention. He was ever mentally alert. In 1929 Archbishop Duke named Father MacKenzie Vicar Foran of the , which included the parishes of Nelson, Ross- land, Trail, Grand Forks, Cranbrook, Fernie and Kimberly with numerous missions. Father MacKenzie died in 1939, but the memory of him lives on for his work in instructing, governing and sanctifying souls. Reverend Joseph Charles MacDonald — 1886-1946 Father MacDonald was a native of Orwell Cove where he was born in 1886. Son of John and Catherine MacDonald, he attended Prince of Wales College and St. Dunstan's , and also taught school for two years. In 1916 he was ordained at Vernon River by Bishop O'Leary after following four years of study in Quebec Grand Seminary . Father MacDonald taught at St. Dunstan's until 1923 at which time he became pastor of St . George's. Here he remained until 1941 when illness forced him to relinquish his duties. From 1941 to 1946 he lived at Summerside where he played a responsible role and assisted his good friend, Monsignor G. J. MacLellan . He died at the Charlottetown Hospital in July, 1946. His remains lay in state overnight at St . George's where Mass was celebrated by Monsignor Richard St . John. Father Owen Kiggins of Georgetown delivered the funeral oration. The remains were then transferred to Vernon River where Mass was celebrated the following morning by Monsignor MacLellan, V.G. ; the sermon was given by Rev. William V . MacDonald, Seven- . Interment took place in the adjoining cemetery. Rt. Reverend Wilbert Basil MacKenzie — 1888-1966 Reverend Wilbert Basil MacKenzie comes from a truly religious family. He had two other brothers in the priesthood. Very Reverend Joseph C . MacKenzie of Nelson , B.C. was one of the outstanding priests in the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Rt. Reverend Raymond Vincent MacKenzie was a teacher and Rector of University. Father Wilbert was born at Vernon River , December 6th, 1888. He first studied at Vernon River Primary School.
