Immediately following his ordination, he was appointed to the faculty of St. Dunstan’s University, where he was a well known figure for 33 years, the last 13 of which he held the post of Rector. Monsignor MacKenzie was named to that post in 1943, succeeding Rt. Reverend J. A. Murphy who

was appointed Pastor of Kinkora.

Second World War.

In 1956, he was given the task of organizing the Village of Parkdale, into what is now known as St. Pius X Parish. He was the first and the only Pastor of the new parish up until the time of his death.

The difficult task of organizing a new parish along with the building of a new Church and Rectory, coupled with the long years of teaching and being Rector of S.D.U. took its inevitable toll on his physical health, and after several months of failing health, he died of heart failure in the Charlottetown Hospital on April 26, 1963. He was buried in the Priests’ Plot in the cemetery at Vernon River, his native Parish.

A prominent Prince Edward Island educator, a zealous, devoted and beloved Priest, his priestly attributes will be held in reverent memory by all who knew him.
