CHAPTER XXV.
THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT.—-A SERMON PREACHED

Text—Gen. xxii: 15—18: “And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time and said, by myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, that in bless- ing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multi— ply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand which is on the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of thine enemies, and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed my voice.”
“Abraham saw the day of the Lord afar off, and was glad, because as his seed, Christ was promised in the covenant which God made with him. N ow to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, and to seeds, as of many, but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ.” Gal. iii: 16. In this, therefore, we see the twofold nature of the cove- nant, the promise first held out to Abraham and his seed which is Christ, and afterwards to Abraham and his lineal descendants, in perpetuity, during the permanence of the Mosaic dispensation; but after the close of the typical dispensation, to Abraham and
