when some of the boys came home. "They had a reception over at Mrs. Wood’s last night for Johnnie McCarron, Wilfred Duffy,
and Charlie Hamm. They had a great time. They presented each one with a five-dollar gold piece. They danced and everything."
John Farquharson was the only man from Bunbury to serve in World War II.
NURSERY
In 1945, W. L. Cotton established a trust fund of $100,000 for the purpose of operating a nursery to provide plant material to the public for a nominal fee. Between 1945 and 1947, he purchased two parcels of land along the Bunbury Road from the Aubrey Mutch estate to become the Bunbury Nursery. Additional land along MacDonald Road was purchased in 1953. The provincial
government operates the nursery, receiving revenue generated from the trust fund.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
The Bunbury Women’s Institute was organized on June 8, 1950. At their first annual meeting in November 1951, there were 19 paid members. Their first executive was:
