The Presbyterian settlers would have been familiar with the order.of service called the Westminister :iDirectory", prepared in 1645 and adopted by the Scottish Church that year after some revision. The '^Directory'' service had been influenced by John Knox 's service "Forms of Prayerifwritten in 1556. which had been the first Reformed service in English. The "Psalter and Church Practices" of 1539 was also an influence on Scottish/Presbyterian worship. The Scottish Church did not hold fast to the Directory very before changing it: instead of one O.T . and one N.T . chapter each Sunday, no lesson was read, but a passage would be preached on at length, usually for an hour: the doxology after each psalm was dropped, as was the Lord's Prayer; communion was held only quarterly instead of monthly due to the shortage of ministers. In Canada , the Presbyterian service maintained its austerity but reflected the change so prominent in the pioneer way of life.
