NCE upon a time there was a lonely little
boy. He had no playmates; he had no
mother; his father was away on long hunting
trips much of the time, and so the child was alone in the Wigwam.
Sometimes the little boy would play in the forest near the Wigwam. One day he was play- ing beside an old well, and he happened to look in. What was his surprise to see, down in the well, a little boy! The child looked up and smiled; and after a little while he climbed up out of the well.
“What is your name?” asked the lonely little boy.
“My name is Kitpooseagunow,” answered the child, “and I am your brother. When our wicked grandfather seized our mother, and was taking her away, I was born. He threw me into the well, and I have lived there ever since.”
The two children played happily together all day; and when night was coming, Kitpoosea— gunow went back to his home in the well. As
he was leaving his brother he said: 132
