GLOSSARY OF MICMAC WORDS
Key to pronunciation. Consonants: g sounded hard, always, as in go; 0, exactly like k; ch, as in church.
Vowels: a. as in father; a as in fate; d as in fat; 6 as in sec- ond a in abaft;
e as in me; é as in met; 61} as i in pine (ei in height);
1'. as in pin; 0 as in no; 6 as in not; u as in use; 12 as in tub;
00 as in fool; 66 as in good; ow as in now.
When vowels are doubled as ad, the usual sound of these let- ters is prolonged.
Accent: The usual place for the accent in Micmac is on the penult. (In this glossary the accent has been marked upon each word, in order to indicate pronunciation clearly.)
M or n at the beginning of a word preceded by an accent, thus ’m, 'n, is sounded without a vowel.

Boot’ up Whale. The suflix askw (or slow)
fem. gem, usually denotes wife; as. Bootupskw, Mrs. Whale; Mooin askw, Mrs. Bear.
Ché noo’ A fierce cannibal giant of the north, with heart of ice and stone.
Che poch’ calm A horned dragon; the tutelary deity of Boooius.
