HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE EAST POINT BAPTIST CHURCH MR . mi MRS . Dl \<\\ ROBERTSON DEACON JOHN STEWART Deacon Stewart was ordained to the office of Deacon in 1835 and served till his death in 1875. "Deacon John", as he was frequently called, was a gentle and kindly man—a good citizen and a good neigh¬ bor, loyal to his church, and popular in the community. His reverent manner and amiable character fitted him to become an acceptable cup¬ bearer for the King. His long period of service as deacon, covering al¬ most half a century, linked him with the Church in its infancy, and with the church in its strength and prosperity after the revival of 1874. He had known but one pastor. Rev. John Shaw , and one Church, the Bap¬ tist Church on the hillside, overlooking his home. When the great re¬ vival of 1874 was over he said to this writer, / find so many new faces at the Lord's table that I feel like a stranger, but I'll soon be among old friends on the other side." He died March, 1875. - J. A. F . 59
