HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE EAST POINT BAPTIST CHURCH feelings left an indelible impression on me. He told me he thought that John 14:23 was the most wonderful verse in the Bible. ''Jesus said: If a man love me, he will keep my word; and my Father will love him and we will come unto him and make our abode with him.'" He lived in the experience of that verse. His homely quaint illustrations were unforgettable. To illustrate the stupid feverishness in which so many peopL' rush after the allure¬ ments of the world, he told of one day seeing a goose dart out on the read, then dart back and forth until she was exhausted. He thought she was crazy. On investigating he saw she was trying to catch a grass¬ hopper; just as she was about to pick it up, it made a jump to where she would again dart after it. to be disappointed as before. —H. G. M. Captain McVane was not only a unique and original character, but :. genius in naval architecture and navigation. It was said of him that "he could build a ship and navigate her to the ends of the earth." His conversion, as might be expec;ed, had some features out of the ordinary. The writer of this added note was at the meeting the night he sought pnd found the Lord. He had attended the evening meetings regularly during the great revival of 1874, but exhibited no special interest, but on this particular night the service was notably gripping and the appeal tender and arousing. Many responded, but the old Captain still re¬ mained seated. At length the evangelist rose to close the meeting, but the Captain was on his feet and slowly walking up the north aisle, he said as he walked—" Mr. Macdonald , do you think the good Lord will accept a poor, old sinner like me?" "Yes. my brother, the door is open and the welcome sure." were the evangelist's cheering words. It was a great night. Main- came home to the Father's house. - J. A. F . 73
