The Shalom Singers

The Shalom Singers were formed through the continuation of a youth group started by Rev. Arthur Willis. During the winter of 1973 singing practice was held for about an hour and then the young people went to the church basement for the youth meeting. livcntually the youth meeting part was phased out and the singing group expanded. This group made its first public appearance as the Shalom Singers at the morning service of the liast Point L'nited Baptist Church on May (a. 1973. They took part in a sacred concert at Souris Con- solidated School put on by the New Christian Singers. It wasn‘t until April 38. 197-1 that the group started to perform away from home. On that Sunday afternoon the Shalom Singers sang and gave testimonies at the Annandale Baptist Church. thus beginning a period oftravelling to various churches and singing at many locations. The group numbered about 25-30. Members came from Souris United. South Lake Christian. and East Point Baptist Churches.

During the next several years the group was busy travelling across the Island as well as visiting churches in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. They con- ducted the entire service which consisted mostly of singing. poems. testimonies. and prayer.
