30. MIMINEGASH UNITED CHURCH YOUTH GROUP OF ST. LAWRENCE During the early days of the short pastorate of the Rev. Robert S. Lockhart, in September, 1983 came the organization of a group for the teens of the Miminegash United Church. For several months, it was apparent that something was needed to keep the youth interested in the church. While Sunday School classes were a necessary part of their education, they wanted to meet to discuss their particular interests and needs while at the same time, to learn more about the Bible. Adult leaders, Lorna Costain, Lila Rix, Emily Ellsworth, and Barbara Costain, volunteered to provide guidance for the new organization. In a short time, the first young people’s group of the area consisting of more than twelve members, were meeting in the Miminegash Church Hall every week for Bible study and discussion of their own concerns. This had provided a new outlet for the youth and has led to an increased interest in the activities of the church. The Rev. Robert S. Lockhart recognized the importance of this opportunity, and he attended their meetings offering information and new ideas. The adult leaders are finding a challenge in these activities and are enjoying the experience, tOO. Recently, the members of the group took as a project, the writing of a regular church sermon with the help of the Rev. Robert S. Lockhart. The members discovered that the composition of a sermon can be time consuming as well as thought provoking. Resource people are invited to their meetings to take part in the discussions and question periods. One of the recent topics was drugs and alcohol with a member of the local detachment of the R.C.M.P. present to speak on the subject. At each meeting, each member is assigned specific responsibilities which he or she ap— preciates accomplishing. A week of special activities took place in March, 1984 under the supervision of Lorna Costain, Some of the events included a Kiddies Day with a puppet show and costume contest, an “Aggravation” tournament, checkers, Trivial Pursuit, Crockenole, bowling, road hockey, darts, and a teen dance. The Young People’s Group conducted a morning service on Sunday in the Miminegash United Church. Executive members are Kim Costain, President; Irma McInnis, secretary; and Debbie MacKay, treasurer. Members include: Kirby Ellsworth, Tammy Costain, Karen Anne Ellsworth, Rodney Costain, Kim Costain, Irma McInnis, Tracy McInnis, Kandice Costain, Jamie MacKay, and Paul Costain. 130
