PART VI THE WEST CAPE CIRCUIT AND ITS SIX CHURCHES, 1845 - 1883
1. CAPE WOLFE, LOT 7, BIBLE CHRISTIAN CHURCH
The Rev. Francis Metherall had lost no time in 1833 exploring the possibilities of establishing congregations as far west as West Cape and Cape
Wolfe. He was aided in this missionary work whenever possible by the Rev. Philip James. ‘
The first Bible Christian Chapel in the newly formed Ebenezer Circuit (1844) was built in 1845. In his Quarterly Report dated July 10, 1845, the Rev. William Harris wrote, “The chapel at Lot 7, Cape Wolfe is shingled, but the windows and floor are not as yet put in”. The Prince Edward Island Map of 1852 shows the location of this church on Kinley’s farm in Cape Wolfe.
After twenty—three years, this early structure proved to be inadequate and plans were made for its replacement. The Summerside Journal reported the dedication of the new church building as follows, “On Sunday, the 12th of July, 1868, the Bible Christians opened their new chapel at Lot 7. The day was fine and the attendance throughout the day was large, especially in the morning and evening. The Rev. John Chapple from Charlottetown preached at 10:30 am, the Rev. Richard Richards at 2:15 pm, and the Rev. William Stuart of the Presbyterian Church, kindly consented to preach in the evening. Rev. Stuart chose for the ground of his remarks the same portion of the Scriptures which was taken in the morning. It was obvious that these two gentlemen had not studied from the same book.
On Tuesday, a public tea was held and came up to the expectations of all concerned. The day was fine and the number assembled was large.
