7. BETHEL BIBLE CHRISTIAN CHURCH THE LOT 8 CHURCH

The Bethel Bible Christian Church was built during 1873 and 1874 just off the O’Leary Road in Lot 8 on the 100 acre farm of Charles MacDougall. The corner stone was laid in 1873 by the Rev. Francis Metherall. The first minister in charge of the new church was the Rev. John C. Yelland who preached at the first worship service in June, 1874. Ministers were supplied to this congregation by the

West Cape Circuit.

The Rev. John Ball reported, “The Bethel Church Sunday School held An- niversary Sunday on August 11, 1878 with the Rev. William Medland as guest speaker. A public tea was held with a lecture by Brother W.S. Pascoe. The proceeds of $130.00 from the tea enabled us to pay off $100.00 of debt with two years and eight weeks interest on same amounting to $16.00. The rest of the money was used to paint the church and some liquidation of debt $79.80. Mis- sionary meetings have been held. What we want on this Circuit is more earnest lay labourers, both in the pulpit and in the Prayer Meeting, without which the Circuit can never be worked successfully”.

Again, the Rev. John Ball wrote on November 1, 1878 in West Cape, P.E.I., “We commenced special services in the Bethel Church, Lot 8, on January 15, 1878, continuing them for four weeks and a number manifested the desire to be saved. The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper was administered. Rev. John Ball gave twenty-one cards of admittance into the Bible Christian Society. Financially, we are doing better than last year, but we are still a long way behind with money very scarce. The financial night has been long on the Island. The want of money is the cry on every hand. It (money) was conspicuous by its absence at the

Quarterly Board Meeting”.
