1. AN HISTORICAL STUDY OF THE VILLAGE OF CAMPBELLTON By John Cousins
It was my intention in the beginning, to write about some of the changes, physical, social and religious, which have taken place in the village of Campbellton, western Prince County, Prince Edward Island over the last one hundred and thirty- four years. This I have attempted to do by examining three successive phases in the life of the little village. These phases are: 1. The village as it was in 1850, 2. The village of 1920, 3. the village of today.
The sources from which this paper were drawn were scanty and little informa- tion was readily available. I must, however, acknowledge the assistance of the following people, who gave me as much information as possible, Russell MacNeill, Harry MacKay, Harry Thomson, and my parents, Elbridge and Mary Cousins.
Prince Edward Island saw great changes in the days following Napoleon’s blockade of Europe (1809 - 1815) during the last part of his war with the British. Unable to get their lumber from the now closed ports on the Baltic Sea, the British
