DUTIES OF THE CHURCH SEXTON

The Presbyterians had a unique way of dealing with church sextons. Since it involved the expenditure of money, they were careful to list what they expected to get for their investment. When the job of sexton became vacant, the church proceed— ed to auction off the job to the highest bidder. Why not make a little money before you spend it? The following is a contract signed with Edward MacKay on December

1, 1891 detailing the terms. The spelling is theirs.

“Looking after church, liting fire, sweeping and dusting once a week, looking after lamps, oiling and liting to have a good fire on one hour before service for one year from date, polishing stove for one year. Sold to Edward MacKay for

the sum of$5.00.”

In later years, Elbridge Cousins of Campbellton recalls when he was an eight year old boy, he was sent to the church to light the fire in the big old stove. The chips and wood weren’t dry, and Elbridge began to cry in his frustration. He went to Charles MacNeill’s and poured out his story in great embarrassment. Charlie went to his shed and chopped a few dry cedar chips, and sent Elbridge back to the church to light the fire, this time with great success.

Mrs. Louisa Thomson gave valuable service making sure the fire was lighted at the proper time and the church was swept and dusted properly.
