Campbellton United Church Group 1937
35. THE YOUNG PEOPLE’S GROUP
When Campbellton was having church services every second Sunday, a Young People’s Group was organized and meetings were held one evening during the week that there was no church service. Soon is was noticed that all the members of the family were attending, and the name was later changed to the Fellowship Group.
After devotions, there would usually be conversation and stories followed by a delicious lunch served by the hostess of the evening. Sometimes the meeting would just be a social evening with games. Checkers was very popular among the young people at that time. Just when you felt you could play well, a game with Lloyd Thomson would soon prove differently. He would take all of your checkers in a few
moves.
In winter time, the young people would make ice cream for sale. It was a hard job turning the freezers by hand. The ice cream had to be repacked in ice to keep over night, and the next day it would be taken to the local stores to be sold.
36. CHURCH PICNICS
Picnics were held every summer in Lloyd Bradshaw’s field. He used boards that he had sawed at the mill to make booths, tables and benches. Over the top of the booths, he put branches for shade where suppers would be served.
Church picnics were very popular, and people came from miles around. Decorated cakes were placed at the center of the table to be sold at auction after the
supper was over .
Picnics were organized each summer for several years although it was a lot of hard work, and the weatherman did not always cooperate. Later, it was decided to have the suppers in Bloomfield Hall.
